Tamil Nadu Registers Historic 85.11% Turnout in Single-Phase Assembly Election

Tamil Nadu witnessed a landmark democratic exercise on April 23, 2026, as the state recorded an exceptional 85.11% voter turnout in its single-phase Legislative Assembly election. This figure translates to approximately 4.8 crore votes polled, out of a total electorate of around 5.73 crore registered voters. This historic participation marks the highest polling percentage ever recorded in Tamil Nadu's electoral history for an Assembly election, surpassing all previous records since India's independence.

The 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election saw citizens across the state enthusiastically exercising their franchise. Polling commenced at 7 AM, with reports of long queues forming even before the official start time, indicating a high level of voter engagement, particularly among youngsters.

This year's turnout significantly eclipses previous electoral performances. For instance, it surpassed the 78% record set in 2011, and the 73.63% recorded in the 2021 Assembly elections. Furthermore, it also exceeded the 72.47% turnout in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the 69.72% in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, underscoring a heightened civic participation in the state assembly polls.

A notable factor contributing to this record percentage was the 'Special Intensive Revision' (SIR) of voter rolls conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI). This extensive clean-up operation involved deleting duplicate and deceased voters, which streamlined the electorate from approximately 6.41 crore in October 2025 to the current 5.73 crore. While the absolute number of votes polled might not represent a proportional increase to the percentage surge compared to previous elections with larger electorates, the higher percentage on a refined voter list indicates a more accurate and robust measure of actual participation.

Geographically, several districts demonstrated extraordinary participation. Karur led the state with an impressive turnout of 93.41%, followed closely by Salem, Dharmapuri, and Erode, which all registered over 90% voter turnout. Even Chennai District, which historically has lower turnouts, recorded a significant 83.44%, with constituencies like RK Nagar and Perambur exceeding 89%.

The Election Commission implemented extensive logistical arrangements to ensure a smooth and secure polling process. Over 106,000 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were deployed across 75,064 polling booths in 33,133 locations. Approximately 3.5 lakh polling personnel were on duty, and all vehicles transporting EVMs were equipped with GPS tracking for enhanced security and monitoring. For transparency, 100% webcasting was ensured in all polling stations. Additionally, voter-friendly initiatives, such as easily identifiable color photos of candidates on EVM ballot papers, newly designed Voter Information Slips, and provisions like wheelchairs and transport facilities for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) voters, were put in place.

The election was not just a test of voter enthusiasm but also a significant political event. It marked the debut of actor C. Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as a new political force. The results, declared on May 4, 2026, indicated an end to the 59-year dominance of Dravidian parties in the state, leading to Tamil Nadu's first hung assembly.
