Nehru Remarks Ignite Political Firestorm in Tripura as Congress Demands Apology

Asignificant political controversy has erupted in Tripura following critical remarks made by State Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath against India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The minister's comments, delivered during a public gathering where he emphasized the expansion of sanitation facilities across the country, have drawn strong condemnation from the opposition Congress party, leading to a heated political storm in the state.

During his address, Minister Nath asserted that despite ruling the country for decades, leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi failed to provide even basic sanitation facilities to millions of citizens. He illustrated his point by recalling his personal experiences, noting that in earlier decades, many villagers were compelled to use riverbanks, fields, and bamboo groves for open defecation due to the absence of household toilets. Nath then contrasted these past conditions with the present situation, highlighting that over 110 million toilets have been constructed across India under various government initiatives, with approximately 560,000 toilets built in Tripura alone.

The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee reacted strongly to these statements, condemning Nath's remarks and accusing him of disrespecting former national leaders. The party's state leadership described Nath's comments as an attempt to gain political mileage by targeting leaders who are no longer able to respond to such criticism. The controversy has also brought to light Minister Nath's own political history. Before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nath was a prominent leader within the Congress party for many years. During his tenure with the Congress, he frequently lauded Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi. However, since his switch to the BJP in 2018 and subsequent appointment as a minister, Nath has repeatedly criticized the Congress and its historical leadership, a pattern that his latest remarks continue. In March 2025, he faced another significant controversy when he was accused of making alleged 'racial comments' against the Leader of the Opposition, Jitendra Chaudhary, during a budget session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly. This previous incident led to a privilege motion being filed against Nath and an opposition walkout, further highlighting a contentious style of political discourse attributed to the minister. More recently, Nath also commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for completing 12 years in office, noting that Modi had surpassed Nehru's tenure as the longest-serving democratically elected head of government in India's history. These recurring instances suggest a broader strategy by the minister to highlight the perceived shortcomings of past Congress governments while lauding the achievements of the current administration.
